Why you're struggling to take action

New to the Solopreneur Diary Entries? Welcome! This weekly newsletter comes to you every Saturday, featuring anti-hustle success tips & the behind-the-scenes scoop of solopreneurship.

Hi Reader,

New vlog:

***

In last Saturday's edition of the Solopreneur Diary Entries weekly newsletter, I shared about a simple thought experiment you can use when you're struggling to achieve a goal...

(You can read it HERE)

...and one of the things I often hear from solopreneurs is that choosing the best course of action, and TAKING action, is a particular challenge. (Is that true for you, too?)

Let's get into that topic today!

When you're struggling with *doing a thing*, it's often because there's something else beneath the surface (or other contributing factors at play).

(...Because if the answer was to "just" *do the thing,* then you would have done it already.)

FOR EXAMPLE:

  • In order to do a thing, you need to trust yourself that you are capable of doing it and that you know the best course of action...
  • And to trust yourself, you need to be honest with yourself about your capabilities and wants/needs and strengths/weaknesses...
  • And to be honest with yourself, you need to trust that you can handle that honesty...
  • And to do this in a HELPFUL way, you need to be kind to yourself and be able to motivate yourself and have good self leadership...
  • And to do this in an EFFECTIVE way, you need to develop your self communication skills...
  • etc.

It all ties together!

It’s all integrated, which is why **doing the inner work of building these intrapersonal skills** matters so much.

Here's a quick overview of what can happen if we do NOT do this…

  • If you don’t do the thing, you may never get what you want from business/life (e.g. You stop yourself from creating or seeing opportunities, or you passively wait for things to work themselves out, or you sabotage any kind of change from happening).
  • If you don’t trust yourself, you may struggle to do the thing (e.g. You experience self doubt and insecurities, you second-guess yourself, and you take bad advice because you think someone else knows what’s better for you than you do).
  • If you aren’t honest with yourself, you may struggle to trust yourself (e.g. You have difficulty acknowledging your strengths and weaknesses, you struggle to get clarity on what you're capable of and where you need extra supports, and you hide what you truly want/need from yourself).
  • …and so on.

The more we develop these skills, the more we can live our best lives, be our best selves, build our best businesses!

By the way: These are areas we can ALWAYS continue to improve over time!

There’s no limit to them — there‘s always more we can do to deepen self honesty, self trust, etc. This is beautiful, because it means we can always strive to be even more of *ourselves*, while fully honouring and appreciating where we are *now*.

Love that.

All of this is to say, if you're struggling to take action or to figure out the best course of action for your unique situation, I want you to know that this stuff can be multi-layered and multi-faceted. It's often much more complex than you might give it credit for.

I also find that there's a deep sense of RELIEF that can come from acknowledging this, because it indicates that there's *so much more* that can be done about it!

If you're struggling to take action, then continuing to try to force yourself to take action won't help.

If you're struggling to figure out the best course of action to take, then turning around and around in circles to stare at all the different possible paths won't help.

Here's what will help: Doing the above intrapersonal work of self honesty, self trust, self leadership, self kindness, improved motivation and communication, etc.

(We can do this together! Book a coaching session HERE.)

Here are a few questions that can act as your "starting point" for all of this:

  1. How long have you been struggling/waiting to take action?
  2. Is this thing something you even WANT to do? (or, if you feel like you "should" do it — What makes it so important?)
  3. What are you willing (and not willing) to do to move forward on this?

If you're willing to dig deep into your intrapersonal skills, then let's hop on a coaching call and start doing this work together. You aren't alone!

I'm curious: What comes up for you when you ask yourself the above 3 questions? Hit reply and let me know!

Have a great weekend,
